Functional Movement Screen

 

An athlete appears strong, powerful and agile. They are able to sprint, hit home runs, dunk basketballs, serve at 120 mph, score touchdowns, and set world records. But through all of the greatness of their strength, these athletes can still possess weakness. Just like all of us can. After all, we are all athletes in our own, correct?  Maybe an athlete of the household, on the job, as a parent, or in the gym. In order to stay healthy, prevent injuries and move efficiently, our bodies must be able to exhibit a balance of stability and mobility, whether we are simply walking up a flight of stairs or swinging a golf club.

At C.O.R.E. Physical Therapy, we are pleased to announce the use of the Functional Movement Screen™. This screen consists of fundamental movements that require a balance of mobility and stability. We will take you through the screen, score you 0-3 depending on how you move, and determine which “corrective exercises” are appropriate to make you move better, feel better, and look better. We believe through repetition and training, the FMS and the exercises will change your weaknesses into strengths and decrease your risk for injury.

What makes the FMS so unique?

The FMS and corrective exercises were developed by nationally renowned physical therapist, Gray Cook and colleagues. After years of studying how infants move and their movement patterns develop, the FMS came into action. Thus, we know that our bodies and our brains are capable of eliminating movement compensations and our bodies’ weakest link.  

Currently, the FMS is being studied at Baptist Sports Medicine in Nashville, TN with high school athletes. Also, researchers at the University of Evansville (IN) screened NFL players prior to the season. Of those athletes that scored below a 14/21, 51% of them were injured during the season.
